The villages covered by the R&R programmes of the company include Bhurkamunda, Banjari, Kurebaga, Bhagipalli, Brundamal, Maa Samleswari Nagar, Katikela, Gudigaon and Siriapalli.

All these villages are located in the radius of 20 km from the plant site with a population of about 10,000, the majority belonging to SC and ST category.

The following are the R&R initiatives undertaken by VAL in the Jharsuguda district:

Health
VAL has been conducting regular health clinics for two hours everyday wherein patients are provided free treatment. Some of the major treatments include cough & cold, skin diseases and malaria. The health clinics have helped in reducing general health problems.

Education
Children’s education programmes have been implemented in partnership with school teachers. Children from 1st to 5th standard have been targeted for special teaching assistance. The target is to enroll 30 more students next quarter.

Livelihood
The company has been conducting training sessions on housekeeping (ORETUS) and soft skill development. These training sessions focus on monitoring and counselling the students and facilitate faculty discussions, which emphasize improved student learning. 22 PDFs have been provided soft skill training and are currently being trained on housekeeping activities.

VAL has been providing financial support to four self-help groups (SHG). Women SHG members have been provided financial assistance to start micro enterprises.

Infrastructure
The company has either completed or is on the verge of completing several construction projects. For instance, construction of the village road from R&R Colony to Brundamal has started in partnership with the local contractor. It will help the villagers avail better communication facilities.

Others
As per the R&R Policy 2006, a one time cash grant has been provided to 40 PDFs. This would ensure financial security of PDFs and enable them to make fruitful investments to secure their livelihood.

Construction of the Rohidaspada crematorium has been completed. This crematorium is available for funeral rituals.

The company has organised village meetings in partnership with community members. Issues related to livelihood have been addressed and activities have been identified. Three more motivational meetings will be conducted next quarter.

The company has sought to promote cordial relations with PDFs by conducting annual functions and reward recognition programmes.
