CAPTIVE POWER PLANT
Overview
Vedanta Aluminium Ltd. (VAL) puts a premium on operational excellence in all its plants. The firm strives to be at the forefront of technological innovation and establish itself as a leading player in both the domestic and global aluminium industry. VAL sets high standards and strives to adhere to these by forging partnerships with some of the world’s leading equipment suppliers.

VAL is in the process of completing the 1215 MW coal-based captive power plant at Jharsuguda, which is the largest in India. At present, five out of the total nine units of the plant are under operations, which facilitate cost-effective power supply to the 0.25 mtpa greenfield aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda and maximize operational efficiency. The remaining units of the plant are scheduled to get completed by December 2009, which would further augment power generation and thereby enhance the functional superiority of the aluminium smelter.

Eminent Suppliers
The Jharsuguda power plant sources its products from renowned manufacturers, who are market leaders in their respective domains. VAL has entered into an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with SEPCO 111 of China, which supplies boilers, turbines and generators of Shanghai Electric Group Co Ltd, one of China's largest mechanical and electrical equipment manufacturers.

VAL’s corporate partnerships bear testimony to its commitment to environmentally-sustainable business practices. The firm has procured environmentally-friendly GEHO pumps from Weir Netherlands, a leading global designer and manufacturer of pumps, for the power plant’s high concentration slurry disposal (HCSD) system. Distributed control systems (DCS) such as Foxboro and PLC have been sourced from Rockwell, Siemens and Schneider Electric, the world leaders in power, control and information solutions. VAL has teamed up with several other companies to source the best equipments for the power plant and facilitate uninterrupted power supply to the Jharsuguda smelter.
