VAL is committed to the advancement of health standards of local communities in Lanjigarh and surrounding villages. The following schemes have been undertaken by the firm to promote health standards of the people. |

| Mobile Health Unit and Ambulance services |
VAL puts a premium on the extension of efficient, cost-effective medical services to the project affected families in the villages surrounding Lanjigarh. To this effect, the Mobile Health Unit (MHU) organised 182 rural camps addressing primary health care issues of 5,282 villagers. Free medicine and diagnosis were provided in 57 peripheral villages. The company has donated a fully operational ambulance, which would provide emergency medical services to the people of Ambodola and surrounding villages. |

| Malaria Control Drive |
VAL’s health projects have been instrument in arresting the scourge of malaria in Langijarh and surrounding villages. Under the Malaria Control Drive, which covered 40 adjoining villages, blood samples were collected with the help of expert technicians. Bleaching powder was sprinkled in the surrounding areas and drains. Awareness camps were held, where free medicines were distributed to malaria affected patients. |

| Health Check-Up Camp |
| In order to promote the health condition of children, VAL organises Health Camps with specialist doctors. The objective of the camps is to provide specialized cures for water borne diseases which children are generally prone to. |

| Sanitation Drive |
VAL spreads awareness among the community about better health & hygiene through Sanitation Drives in villages bordering the plant site. The surroundings are cleaned with the help of villagers and drains are constructed. |

| Family Planning Operation Camp |
VAL strives to spread awareness about family planning methods among the people in Lanjigarh district. In association with District Health Department, Kalahandi, Family Planning camps were conducted and people were made aware about and encouraged to adopt Family Planning methods like Vasectomy and Tubectomy. Five Camps were organised in Biswanathpur, Bengaon, Lanjigarh and Lanjigarh Road leading to 10 Vasectomies and 217 Tubectomies. |

| Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization Programme |
As a part of its extensive health initiatives, VAL makes a conscious effort to mitigate the effect of pulse polio. In association with the government health department, Kalahandi, the company organised two rounds of Pulse Polio Programme in Lanjigarh Block in the year 2008-09. |

| Health awareness camps |
VAL organised an ‘HIV/AIDS Awareness Week’ from May 19th to May 26th, 2009. Awareness was spread through street play, folk-dance and entertainment activities. The sensitization drive was organised in collaboration with OSACS and SHADOW. Footfall exceeded 20,000 people from Lanjigarh. |

| Looking Ahead |
VAL strives to improve the health and sanitation standards of the local communities in Lanjigarh through various innovative programmes. The following health and sanitation initiatives will be implemented in the future: |

- VAL intends to conduct eight sanitation drives in eight villages to facilitate
awareness about health and hygiene among local communities.
- Safe drinking water is the essence of good health. In order to provide safe
drinking water to villages surrounding Lanjigarh, VAL would repair damaged
handpumps as and when required.
- The District Hospital at Bhawanipatna in collaboration with Sulab International
has been providing crucial healthcare services to around 10,000 people. Going
ahead, VAL would continue maintaining the hospital and disseminating health
services to communities in peripheral villages.
- The scourge of malaria has affected several people residing around the plant site.
VAL strives to enhance responsiveness among local communities to the life-
threatening disease. Plans have, therefore, been made to conduct IEC
Awareness Programme on malaria.
